State Of The Blog
February 10, 2008
- I’ve been on Blogger (hosted myself and hosted on blogspot.com).
- I’ve been on MovableType (hosted myself… I think twice).
- I’ve been on Community Server (hosted myself).
- I’ve been on .TEXT (hosted myself).
- I’ve been on dasBlog (hosted myself).
- I’ve been on WordPress (hosted myself and hosted on wordpress.com).
- I have Windows Live Spaces, Yahoo 360, Vox, LiveJournal, MySpace, and Facebook accounts… all are unused because blogging there is either confusing and/or subpar.
And my conclusions up to this point:
- Don’t host yourself. Why? Upgrades are a pain in the ass and server hosting isn’t cheap (just for hosting a blog of nonsense.. I paid $10/month).
- WordPress is currently the best blogging server software hands down.
- Don’t use Blogger (they have too many outages and you get new features only when it’s a presidential election year). Plus all the original Blogger people have left anyway.
- wordpress.com is the best blogging host.
- Free hosting with 3GBs of free space.
- The best web stats I’ve seen (no need for those Sitemeter image kludges).
- They are constantly adding new features… like snowflakes
- If you want your own domain name/URL, it is only $10/year (does not include domain registration… go to Go Daddy for that).
- If you want email addresses using your domain name, they make setting up Google Apps For Domains a breeze.
- WordPress has the best anti-comment spam system (Akismet). Seriously, I don’t deal with ANY COMMENT SPAM… and I don’t use those god awful CAPTCHAs like Blogger. Oh, I get comment spam, it’s just that it’s automatically handled for me.
- Finally, WordPress makes importing your old blog posts from Blogger or MovableType a snap (look under “Manage->Import”).
Too bad I’m not getting paid by WordPress

Give it time. You’ll grow to dislike it as well.
